Avant guys: roof rails getting pale and dull. Repaint or scuff and buff to aluminum shine?

I understand it's a rather common problem. Cost to have them professionally painted is obscene. Could do them myself in our shop quite easily, but have also heard you can get some Mother's Polish and "get dirty", and they'll eventually buff out to a gorgeous aluminum shine. Might be urban myth and a sh*tpile of work, though. Opinions?

You have aluminum?I kept mine waxed.I would not paint it DIY.imo, buff & seal or high-temp clear

just put some love into them and they should clean up just fine.

You should check over in the detailing forum, they should have good suggestions on products to use.

you wouldn't spray them yourself, but would clear them yourself?....

I would think that if you try and clear them after buffing, the rails would fish eye pretty bad.

I appreciate the contradiction in that too. The long-term result of chipped clear is not as bad.

spray it with enamel and clear over that. it will be hard as a rock
