buffing under clear coat

buffing under clear coat
Dealer said spots are under the clear coat and needs to be buffed out by body shop. How effective is this? I guess the shop would have to re-apply a clear coat after buffing? Would there be a diffference in color? Should I have them re-paint the whole car? Thanks for any advice.

Can't be done. Buffing under the clear coat is called sanding. ;-)
Which is what they will have to do. What is likely happening is that the clear coat is lifting off of the color coat. They will have to sand the clear away, and re apply.. if the paint guys are good, you will never know. If they are not good, make them paint the whole panel(s), if not the whole car.

What kind of "spots"
I have yet to see an Audi factory finish have such defects.
If they are water spots, they are probably on or into the clearcoat. If the clearcoat has been etched, the only way to remove the spot is polishing the clearcoat down. A common alternative is to polish and glaze which is a combination of rounding out the sharp edges to reduce their appearance and "filling" in minor defects. The glaze is not a permanent solution and will wash out unless protected by wax. The good news is glaze is pretty easy to do yourself followed by wax and it will also help hide a lot of the other little scratches a car picks up over time.
Personally, I wouldnt repaint unless it was my only option. Very few repaint jobs come close to the factory finish in terms of quality and durability.
