Basic Questions

The area that I've dealt with on the all three of the Audis that I owned are worn suspension arms. There are eight aluminum control arms upfront which need replacement when worn. As you would for most cars, jack the front end up so that the tires are not on the ground and grab each tire, move it back and forth, checking for slop. You shouldn't have any play/slop in any of the control arms or the tie rod ends; as long as your down there, check the steering rack for leaks.
1.8T are prone to sludge issues; avoid turbo fours if there isn't documentation of religious maintenance.
Beyond that, valve cover gaskets and neglected slush boxes (which you aren't looking for anyhow). Just use some common sense and avoid cars that some kid had nothing but a good time with.
