The starter, alternator and harness all got fried on a hot mountain drive a few weeks ago. Alternator completely died a few days later.
Afterward the battery wouldn't charge past 12v, even after replacing the alternator.
My mechanic suggested running a car audio amplifier cable from the alternator directly to the battery, while keeping the OEM harness in place.
Worked like a charm! Car has never been better.

hooked one end up to the + of my battery and the other directly to the larger cable coming out of the back of the alternator, but kept the stock cable and harness in place.
Works like a charm.
My mechanic (VW Specialities in Huntington Beach) said he's never seen a wiring harness go bad on an Audi, but has seen lots on VWs. He also mentioned that my car is almost 10 years old and has 160k miles, so it IS possible.
