I prefer the fork mount...
Reasons:
1) Seems like a more secure mounting method to me.
2) Cleaner looking as the bike tray doesn't overhang the front bar at all and doesn't have the extra arm used for the frame mount. More aero looking when bikes aren't mounted.
3) Works with a variety of different frame styles.
4) No contact with the bike frame = less chance of scratching a nice bike paint job (if that matters to you). Usually my bike is pretty darn muddy, so using a frame mount would just squash all the mud/dirt into the frame and all over my roof.

I'm trading in my Thule roof rack for one by these guys: http://www.saris-products.com/
The money thing... for the same cost:
+ better looking
+ more aerodyamic
+ easier to use (it's one piece)
+ it appears to be stronger...that's up to marketting =)
- I ski and they only have a 4 ski holder instead of a 6 ski holder. Oh well. I'll cope.

You might want to read some on-line reviews...
maybe on MTBR.com? When I was looking at my first rack two years back, the saris racks seem to get terrible reviews by people. Poor quality, materials rust in a year or two, flimsy hardware...that sort of thing. Maybe they have improved since then, but Thule and Yak seem to garner most of the attention because they are quality products (albeit a little pricey).

I should take my own advice.
For the heck of it, I went over there to check out the reviews. Ignore the chili pepper ratings and read the words people put behind these products. Still the same stuff with Saris...quality/design problems.
Yak had a few negative comments about the above, and then some about price and ease of set up (where Saris received very good reviews). Overall there seemed to be many more people that were happy with the construction of the Yak rack over the Saris.

I was gonna say...sarris didn't gethorrible reviews...
as with any publicly posted reviews on the web, everything should be taken with a grain of salt...i.e...audiworld itself.
Thule and Yak both seemed totally solid when it came to construction... but for me...there was more to it than just that. A brick makes a great paperweight...but sometimes ...there's more to it.
Asthetics, ease of use...etc.
I don't leave my rack on... and only use it for skis and luggage. =)
Almost all the complaints on that page seemed related to the bike accessories...

Here is my dalan hitch receiver without bike rack...

... I use the hitch mount bike rack and sometimes pull a trailer. Putting bikes on the back is a lot easier. Depending on your bike frame shape, you may have difficulty with the hitch mount bike holder.
