Default Button on transmission shifter stuck in depressed position

Hey,

I have a problem on my '97 A4 pre tiptronic automatic.

The button on the shifter stays in the depressed postion. I can pry it out but it springs back in tp the depressed position.

The car is stuck in either neutral or drive and I can't release the key.

I have tried to pull the shifter handle off using the instructions posted on the forum, but cannot.

Any ideas of the problem, maybe a broken spring?

Thanks for any help/advice.
