buying a used 1.8t
I'm an frequent AW reader, you guys are great. I can't wait for the day this summer when I actually can buy my own A4. For now, I just live vicariously through you guys.
I've got about 12k to spend, and I want to buy a used A4. (And I'd love a turbo for all the usual reasons) Thoughts about buying a used 1.8t? I know that for that kind of money I'm going to have to get one with relatively high miles. For the money, and for maintenance purposes, would I be better off with a 2.8?

Get the 1.8t
You will get a newer car in better shape if you go for the 1.8t over the 2.8. One thing to watch out for is the 90k service. This is the one where the timing belt, water pump, etc are replaced. This service is very expensive, $1800, but necessary. If this service has been done, then better. If not, then plan on this expense. If you are mechanical, and you can do the work yourself, the parts cost about $400, saving you a bundle. I just did this myself. It took about 20hrs from prepping to cleanup, including the 30k service items like plugs, filters, oil, etc.
