buying a used a4, what's the best year to get?

If you decide to buy a used car, check few things, test drive at highway speeds, see if you feel any vibrations, could be tires, or something else tie rods, or bushings, if equiped with cruise control check if it's working, also check if headlight washers work too, then check underneath the car and see axles, for any leaks, expecially at the back ... and the last check if airconditioning is working...
I have shoped for used Audi and bought 97 A4 2.8QMS, 98 and 99 models were couple $$$$ more, and some where in preety bad shape, I checked with http://www.carfax.com VIN #, and most of them were leased, which tells me who ever leased did no care about the car at all.
