Can I put 225 45 17 tires on a 17 x 8 inch width rim or is that tire to narrow?

nope.....it's fine......that's exactly the setup I'm running.....
those are the most common size for 17x8's, actually

that's the IDEAL size for that wheel. A wider tire will make the wheel look smaller...
because a wider tire will bulge out a little... giving the appearance of a 16" rim. The sidewall of a 225/45/17 will taper in a little as it goes from wheel lip to tread... thus giving the appearance of a larger rim.
