CEL and codes P1296 & P0116

CEL and codes P1296 & P0116
I have a 2001 A4 quatro 2.8L ATQ. CEL came on and codes read P1296 and P0116. Coolant temp guage is steady and seems to be working fine. The engine coolant was below minimum so I filled it up with a 50/50 mix.
CEL is still on. Do I have to reset (erase) the CEL (codes) or do they go out when the issue is fixed.
Note I have bought a new ECT sensor, but don't want to install if the problem is already fixed.

I called my mechanic. He said if I got those codes, just replace the coolant temp sensor (ECT) and then he erases the code after replacement. He also mentioned that the light may go out on its one in a few hundred miles when the car realizes the fix has been made.
