Default Re: I can't but...

OT

Are you from Frederick MD? I have a friend from there, and he always calls it Fredneck... play on words.

Default FYI

I also had the steering creek problem.
1.rack replaced
2.u joints replaced
3.Replacement colum was on its way and I sold the car.
FSK in Frederick MD may have Coil packs in stock I was in 6:30 PM and out the next day.
The steering rack problem may really be a colum problem.

Default that was the rumour I heard as well...

Apparently Bremi (the CP vendor) decided to change the design slightly to reduce mfg. cost by removing some sort of insulation around the CP. This was without Audi's knowledge. Of course, this sounds like a story that would come from Audi - it's easy to blame the problem on someone else.

There is another story too. In an effort to keep the part prices down, Audi selected a vendor which agreed to provide the least expensive CPs. Long term effects were not known at that point as it usually takes many thousands miles and specific weather conditions for the failures to occur. Of course, there is nothing wrong with choosing the most cost effective supplier - that's what helps to keep the price of the cars down for the customers. However, Bremi did have more robust CPs available (still does), although at a much higher price.

Default yes

But I'm not a good representation of a true fredneckian. They even have those little round white "country" sticker with FDNX similar to OBX.

I hope you can solve the steering noise problem I know the FSK Audi mechanic and service manager really worked hard to locate the problem. If Audi did not have the 50,000 mile warrenty I would probably have to spend $4000.00 in additional repairs over the 1st 56,000 miles of the cars life. Unacceptable.

Default Are you talking about the creaking steering wheel problem?

I read a post here where someone said their tech found a solution... lemme dig it up. It was some spring of sorts.

Lemme find it.

Default Nevermind...

after searching, I realize you also know of the "spiral spring" but your symptoms don't seem to match those that specific to a spiral spring problem...

FWIW, neither do mine. No plastic scratching sound... It's a good squeek/creak in certain sweat spots when turning the wheel. From what I've read they may have to replace steering rack/column. At this point, I hope they do... I'm gonna be w/o my car for a while anyways. This way, I get an alignment too
