check engine

i've had my a4 2.8 for 2 1/2 months and my check engine light has come on 4 times and it doesn't go out after stopping the car (it's a 1998 that was left over). It comes on during regular driving. I make sure to tighten the fuel cap, never top off the fuel and never run the car while fueling. What's the deal? Should I file a complaint with Audi? I'm very frustrated, as if I have nothing better to do than bring my car in for service every few weeks. Any suggestions?

The computer should be storing a fault code...

every time the light is set. This should give the dealer some place to start. Perhaps you need to ride the dealer (I would move up the chain of command until you get satisfaction, and always remember that honey works better than vinegar, be nice, but persistant).
