Check engine, hard start, random
Hi all,
Been having a strange problem. Haven't pulled codes yet but wanted to see if anyone had something similar.
1998 A4 2.8 with 111k miles. Randomly won't start unless I pump the gas while turning the key for 15 seconds. Then, I have to keep the RPMs up for a minute or else it will stall. Whenever this happens the check engine light goes on and stays on for the duration.
Doesn't always do this. Sometimes, if I stop the car and start it again after driving for 10 minutes, the light goes off and stays off. Most recently, the car sometimes starts as normal but the CEL stays on regardless.
Sound familiar? Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe 02 sensor...

Oxygen sensors are in open loop when you start the engine.
Until the catalytic converters warm the rear ones do nothing.
So I doubt it.
Basically it's MAF checks airflow ,throttle body position, temp sensors (coolant and outside)that set the mixture. CPS sets the injectors and the spark timing.
