Check Engine Light
I was driving on Friday night and the light came on 5 minutes into a 10 minute drive to Home Depot. I went home and used the car as little as possible. called the dealer on Monday to get an appointment and after asking whether the light was flashing (It is not) the mechanic told me that I had not driven the car enough after the light went on and that i should drive normally for 4 days and call him back if it is still on... Is this normal?

The CEL will reset if teh fault isn't serious and doesn't get repeated. Personally, I'd want to know

cold weather can play havoc with the cel...
flashing light meens a serious problem and the car shouldn't be driven. a solid light is less serious and may correct it self. you won't hurt you car by driving with a solid light.
