Check Engine Light

I have 96 A4 2.8 with 54000 and my check Engine Light just went on...what does it mean....

it means take it to the dealer

Did you recently fill up with gas?

Make sure your gas cap is on tight. Happened to me (I think).

My Check Engine Light came on for three days and then I stopped to fill up for gas = gone.

Happened to me when I ...

started engine for just a minute then shut down in cold weather. Also remove and put back gas cap tightly. Light went ouot after starting the car 3 or 4 times.

'96 2.8 with 57000 miles. Same thing happened, it is some coolant gauge or something...

As long as it ins't blinking (major problems) your fine. I brough it in and had it hooked up to a computer to see what the problem was. When i go for my 60K mile check-up they're gonna fix it, so it isn't a problem at all really.

Happened to me around 44k. Two possible sources: (more)

1) Gas cap is not tightly closed (not my case)
2) The oxygen sensors need replacement (there are 2 I believe) -- that was my case.

Covered under warranty.
