Check engine light is not on, 1998 A4

This is wierd. My son's 1998 1.8t has a check engine light that is not on. Could the bulb be burnt out?

...or someone pulled the bulb because they had a problem that they couldn't fix.

I almost wondered if there are just no codes currently in the system. But, this is an Audi and we all know how unlikely THAT is. Could it be that the light is working and all is well?

If it turns on when you turn the ignition on, but before you start it, then switches off when you start then all is fine.
