Clicking noise on downshift, any insight?
Recently my 98 1.8t has been making a wierd noise when i down shift or let off the gas as higher RPM's. It has about 80,000 miles on it and hasnt had the timing belt done. I was planning on doing the timing belt soon, but have read that there arent really any symptoms of a timing belt on its way out.
The noise sounds like a spooling click. Does anyone know what this noise might be related to? Besides that, the car has been running great but the noise makes me a little concerned and I would like to isolate the problem as soon as possible. Anyone ever experience this or know what it may be associated with?

DO YOUR TIMING BELT NOW! The tensioner\belt has a history of failing as early as 45k miles...
That timing belt or tensioner goes and you are looking at a $4000 engine repair bill. As to the noise, I would not know.
