Default Climate Control buttons not working

I am trying to find a good description of how to clean the Climate control button in my wifes 1999 A4 1.8T.

That dang cup holder directly above the Climate Control buttons... yep, a coke or something was spilled onto the dash, now none of the buttons on the Climate Control work.

I am suspicious of one thing... The rear window defogger button is stuck "in" the down position, it will not release to it's normal "out" resting position. I'm thinking this might be the whole problem. It was a bit sticky even before the dripping coke problem, but now it is stuck in there good.

I have seen somewhere over the years a good explanation on how to remove the climate control unit and clean out the buttons, but I can't seem to locate it today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to take the climate control unit out and take off the faceplate to access the crevices and clean them.

I don't recall exactly, you may be able to do that by just taking out the stereo and then the climate control. I'm fairly sure you don't need to take out the centre console.

Not a hard job at all, but taking the faceplate off the unit may be tricky. I have never done that, though some here have.

Thanks for the quick feedback, I completely agree, that I think you are correct. I just need to find some procedures to follow to get the climate unit out. I tried to do that exactly, but it seems the mounting bolts are covered partially by the faceplate, so I'm thinking that the faceplate may need to be removed before you can get at those mounting bolts, but I could be wrong?

Remove radio with special tools,(2) mounting screws for console trim are visible once the radio is removed. Remove console trim, mounting screws for climate control are accessible once trim is removed.
