Default Clutch problem?

Just purchased a 2000 A4QS 5 Sp Manual with 90,000 miles from an original owner. The car is perfect inside and outside with all scheduled maintenence and oil changes satisfied.

Drives great but discovered a little problem. It may be the way I'm shifting from N-1-2 but it won't take off quickly. I need to release the clutch very slowly and give it very little gas or it hesitates and I smell something like a combo of oil and pads burning. A little smoke too.

If I start from a total stop slowly it reacts fine. From 2 though the other gears no problem. I can wind in out and no problem.

The only time the issue arises is from N-1-2.

Thanks.

Default doubt it. your probalby not use to it yet. This your first manual?

If you are coming from another manual trans, I'm sure the feel and balance between gas and clutch release is different. That smell is the clutch burning and if you don't learn soon, you will need to replace the clutch.
Usually, a sign of clutch failure is slipping.

not my first manual. my girlfriend lets me operate her honda accord with manual and I can wind it out from a start no problem. in my audi I have to go really slow from a start to 1st then shift quickly to 2nd or I smell that smell and see a little smoke.

my mechanic is going to look at it but I thought I'd bounce it off you guys first so I don't come across as a complete dumba*s when I talk with him.

Default much different than an accord. 1st is a very low gear. On level ground I let the clutch

out @ 1.5k rpms. on the 2.8
I let my friend drive it soon after getting it and he tached it high and let the clutch out slow. I gasped as he did this and smelled the burning clutch. It's probably just a matter of getting to know the car.
I had an accord but got used to the audi quick since I drove many other manual trans cars. It's a heavy car with a low geared 1st. Not sure what the mechanic will tell you.

That makes sense to me. The car has been so perfectly maintained and shifts without an issue about 2nd that I suspected my technique is the problem.

I will try your approach and see how if it improves. Thanks.

Default you'll get the hang of it. Maybe if anything, have someone else give it a drive.

like I said, the shifting is a lot different than an accord. Most cars have a totally different feel when launching from first. I drove hundreds of cars when I worked at dealerships years ago and may be able to adjust quicker but I may still stall or ride the clutch a bit on an unfamiliar car.
