Default Code reader

What code readers are you guys using? I'm looking to purchase a basic one for resetting service lights and checking/resetting codes. I have the 01 A4 and an 06 A6 (that will require the new "can" reader).
The pro v checker from ecs ($109) seems to be a good package, but I've read that the ross-tech system is worth the extra money. Also hear it's hit and miss with the ebay vag-com lap top cords ($15-50). Some of the ebay cords have cd's but other don't seem to so I assume you have to down load the ross tech software from their website ($99?).
Just wanted to get some feedback/advice from anyone who's been in the same situation and how your decision has been working for you.

thanks,
Rob.
P.S. My wife drives a 09 Honda CRV so if it could do basic service rests that would be awesome.

I have two. I have a $75 hand held MAC Tools scanner for quick stuff, and VAG-COM for serious stuff. VAG-COM reads a bunch of stuff from the Miata.

With the two Audis you have, you'd be crazy to get anything other than VAG-COM.

Yup. Back in 2001. When the adapters were home made and hot glued together. I upgraded to my adapter a few years ago to the USB with CAN bus.

I have two readers also - a $100 OBD-II scanner that works for OBD-II and CAN codes and the VCDS from Ross-Tech.

I got the OBD-II reader before I had the Audi, and will use it for quick diagnosis to see what caused an engine light to pop on, but the VCDS is much better if you have the time to boot up a laptop and get it rolling.

I just bought one off Amazon, the Maxscan VAG405, for about $43 including shipping. It seems to work on everything on my 01 Audi, exceptit is not linking to my ABS system. Not sure if it is a problem with the ABS module or my reader. I reset an air bag issue and reset the CEL with it.

It is supposed to be a generic OBD reader too, but it isn't responding when I plug it into my 05 GMC truck

I didn't, and wish I had. Mine works fine, but when I moved to another computer I had to get a re-activation code from Ross. And I can't just move to my laptop either. With the Ross adapter, activation is automatic. You can move from computer to computer with no issues.
