Cold Start Clatter
2000 model A-4, 12 months old, with 2.8., 8,000 miles: At almost every (cold) startup (even up to 60 degrees), brief clatter from valvetrain. Dealer/Service manager says about "1/2" of the 2.8s do this. No problem, he says, and not to worry. I say, bunk. If 50% of the 2.8 engines do this, it's a design fault and should be fixed. Anyone else been told this or have this problem? Car is conservatively driven and not thrashed.

You're going to have a tough time with that one. Even my honda's 3.0 24V V6 did that after about 20,000 and I'm sure it would have lasted about 200,000. It's pretty common among VW/Audi products. My 1.8T's only got 5,000 miles on it and doesn't do it and neither did my Jetta, but my Golf did it after maybe 50,000 miles and it didn't effect anything.

Service manager says it's that part of the valve train gearing that gets the oil last. Sounds like a reasonable theory, but.....
Where in the engine compartment is the evaporative cannister hidden?
