cold start problems please help

i have a 1996 1.8 20v that has developed a problem when starting from cold, the engine starts first time and the auto choke (or i think its an auto choke) works and the revs pick up but by the time i drive to the bottom of the street the engine stalls at the first corner, the engine starts agian no problem on the first turn but runs rough until the engine is warm ive had the car to a few place but they cant seem to find a fault
any help or advice would be much appreciated
