Default Cutting key and programming key and/or remote switchblade

I've been trying to read up on the process of getting a switchblade cut & programmed for my 97 A4. I purchased a switchblade type remote with an uncut key on it, and I found a locksmith that says he will cut it for $3. -- I'm a little leary at how cheap he'll cut it for, whereas the dealer is much more. Has anyone had any problems getting their keys cut somewhere besides the dealer?

The other side of this question is this: programming.

I've been reading posts on here and a few other places about programming the remote, but I am slightly confused. Is the term "programming" the key mean programming it so the lock and unlock buttons work or that the key will work with the car? (does a 97 have an immobiliser?) or is it both?

Once I get the key cut, will following the programming guide in the tech section be all I need to do to have a fully functional switchblade?

Default Did the locksmith see the actual key? It may cost more than $3 to cut it.

Programming is easy, Did your car had the remote key before? If not, you may need someone with VAG-COM to activate it. Just follow the tech article.

Default 3 bucks sounds right, our keys are easy to cut with the right tools

I've said on here many times that I got mine cut at the local hardware store for free (I used to work there, and I brought them the key so why not)

and programming means so the buttons work, the key is "high security" because of the the way it's cut

Default Yeah, I don't think the locksmith knows exactly what kind of key you may be talking about.

I'd spend the $7-$10 to just get it cut at the stealership, b/c if the locksmith cuts it wrong, is he going to replace it?

No, I talked to him over the phone. He asked for the year and such.

I don't have any remotes, I was hoping to program this one.

So there isn't any chip in the key or immobiliser that I have to worry about?
