CV Boot ripped, dumped grease, how long do I have?
I had a major grease dump 3 weeks ago from a CV boot rip that I think occurred during a job about 7 weeks ago. The dealer says I should not only replace the boot, but the bearing and axle just to be safe. They also mentioned that I will hear a clicking noise when the bearing starts to go. I still do not hear a clicking. Am I safe just replacing the boot at this point? Is the dealer f-ing with me? Anyone DIY?

just replace the boot..
..it is a DIY there's a tech article on it. Be aware tho that the bolt sizes are sometimes different from the tech article (axle bolt size and type) so make sure you have the correct tools before you start. Boot is about $30 online.

The dealer is just being safe... take it apart, clean well, pack with proper grease
and replace boot. You'll be fine. Easy DIY if you have the tools--- nothing real fancy, time consuming and messy.

W/ upwards of 2K on the bad boot, would say replace the joint & boot
I haven't done one on an A4, but ones I did on previous cars were no picnic. And the work you have to do is not much more to replace the whole joint as it is to replace just the boot, since I have noticed that you have to yank the joint off the shaft to repalce the boot.
Outer CV joint? The "clicking" noise usually starts with the wheel turned hard while the car is moving; it might be quiet during straight-ahead driving.
