I have Garretts chip and it is sweet(short)
my friend who has a nuespeed says his car is louder and doesn't have quite the pull the garrett chip has. I still smile (and get alittle scared) everytime I open up my 1.8 and scream by everyone!!
21stCDB
1998.5 1.8QM

Do you have Garrett Stage 1 or Stage 2? I am currently debating this. Ordinarily I would just say Stage 2, but I won't be able to upgrade the exhaust for a while and I think Stage 2 might be a bit too much for the factory exhaust. I have heard that with higher compression motors (such as the 1.8T) pinging can be a problem at higher levels of boost unless backpressure can be reduced on the exhaust side (manifold, exhaust, or the turbo itself).
Paul
98.5 A4 1.8TSQ-Tip in Pearl

From Garrets Website @ http://www.giacusa.com/dyno.html
<<Here is a comparison of a standard chip to our 1008 mBar program. The data is corrected crank HP. Pulls were performed on a Clayton Chasis Dyno for the Philly Inquirer and Wired Magazine. The Almost 200 HP correlates well with our 204 HP estimate from 1/4 mile drag runs when calculated on GL racer. The Most noticeable thing is the torque. The front tires on the Passat peel out pretty well when it hits 3000 rpm in first with the 5 speed full throttle (and our stage 2 will do the same with theTip trans in auto mode). Please don't miss interpret this, the chip drives 100% like stock but with more power and slightly better fuel mileage. We only collected a few data points to prevent over-abuse.
note- this is the same motor in the Audi A4 1.8T. >>
