They will take anywhere from 6 to 7 quarts. Just add 6, start it to fill the filter then shut it off, then add till the full mark. My old 99 A6 always took 7 quarts to be on the full mark, but I get some passats and some A4's that seem to only want a hair over 6 quarts to be on the full mark. I really like 5w40 oil for these engines. If your having consumption issues, check the breather parts.
