Default Driving in the snow with a4 1.8T

Can anyone tell me about driving the AWD quattros in unplowed snow covered roads? During the past couple of years, I have been unable to access the plowed roadways in the city 'cause I can't get out of my unplowed lane with my old rear wheel drive volvo. I wonder if I purchase the audi a4, will I have the same difficulty with 12 to 18 inches of snow. Anyone out there with an opinion?

Default You can't beat this all wheel system...

If any all-wheel system will get you through, it is this one. Your only problem is the clearance of the vehicle. Once the belly and all of the weight of the car is perched atop some hardpacked snow it doesn't really matter how many wheel drive you have.

That being said I think I have heard of people getting through snow at the depths you describe - if it is uncompressed stuff you certainly should have no trouble. For that extra degree of confidence you may want to consider snow tires...

Default It's awesome to feel the car gliding on packed snow w/o getting stuck

To get out of my garage and into my driveway I have to make a 90 degree turn. On one occasion last winter I was able to exit my garage & driveway with snow up to the headlight washers in 2 tries. First time the car got stuck about half way through the corner, I backed up and tried again and this time it just muscled its way in this sea of white. The remainder of the driveway I could feel the car almost 'swimming' in the snow all, 4 tires spinning without much traction but still advancing.

So yeah, you'll have no problems on unplowed roads!
