Default Durability Question

Hello Everyone,
I'm looking at a 99 A4 1.8T quattro at a dealership. The price is $8,900, fully loaded, but it has 90,000 miles on it. Its supposed to be in good shape and runs well. My question is, how are A4's for long term durability? I heard they hold up well, what is everyone's experience or opinion?? Thanks for the help.

Default Durability answer

Search the archive, lazybones. Lots of answers there. (PS - make sure the timing belt and water pump were done. Rear wheel bearings were weak. Lower front A-arm bushings might be dying.)

Default Just usual stuff to plan on replacing: turbo soon, CV boots, timing belt, etc.

Nothing too bad really. Just usual stuff that goes out on a German car with 100K miles. Turbo will need replacing soon, and that will run you a little under a grand with installation.

Number one thing to worry about: timing belt and tensioner. Have the dealer do it before you buy the car.

Default between 80 and 130k mine needed:

1. timing belt (broke at 85k...fvcking dealer recommendations)
2. all 4 wheel bearings
3. all 8 front control arms
4. front sway bar links
5. clutch...twice because the first replacement only lasted 30k miles
6. rear sway bar links

It's currently at 130k. within the next year it'll need:

timing belt (again)
power steering pump
shocks (my neusteins have about 85k on them and are starting to feel weak)

be prepared...lots of stuff goes after 80K

Default Re: Durability Question

I have a 97 2.8 Q..I had to do the timing belt, and while that was done I did the water pump thermostat and other things so i didnt have to deal with it later... I had to do my front left tie rod end, and two control arms on the left side. When the summer gets here I will do work on the right control arms/tie rod ends (its making a noise but im not sure what is is yet), sway bar links, and the clutch unfortunately...The 4-link suspension has too much rubber in it, and it wears..So check the control arms.. When you test drive it, take it to the highway and listen for "helicopter" noises, and on regular roads try to hit a few small potholes and bumps, listen for a noise that sounds like a rock in an empty soda can.. They can indicate bad links on the control arms

I just bought one at 90k and put 10k on it in the past four months. It's gobbled up about $2,000 with more to come. Be Prepared...
