Earth Problem ?? what to check
Hi - 1st Post so be gentle.
Got 51 A4 1.9TDI. Sometimes (not always) get warning lights up together and independently to tell me front Nearside Sidelight and indeed rear nearside Brake lights arent working.
Doesnt happen all the time and generally if it does happen then within 10-15 minutes sometimes sooner the warning lights disappear and everything back to normal. I have checked bulbs etc and they do work but not when warning light is on.
Anyone seen this before and if so any ideas on cause/cure.

Probably using the UK registration plate which probably means 2001.
Many people in the UK don't realize that this means zip to the other 6.5 Billion of us. Try reading a UK car enthusiast site and you get very confused.

It could be a bad ground, however the most likely cause is you installed some off brand bulbs in there.
The A4 in particular is very sensitive to having the correct bulbs. I am not talking about it being the correct #, more about the physical connections on the bulb base. If the connections on the bulb are not exactly aligned correctly you will get crossover connections between circuits.
The cheap bulbs with their so-so tolerances can be a problem on the 98-2001 A4s. Never seen a problem on an early car.

Ive seen issues where if you use replacement bulbs with the brass base, they trigger faults. The ecu uses resistanct to measure if the bulbs are there, electricity flows through steel differently than brass so it registers a fault when the specs dont match. Try checking to see if the bulbs have brass bases. If its a group of bulbs check all connections, then check grounds like you mentioned
