Electrical issues

1999 audi a4 2.8

I went to the gym the other night and when I went to leave i didnt have headlights.(oh crap) I move the headlight switch around and nothing. It will turn the parking lights on and the interior back lit stuff like the dash and etc. The only way i could get light last night was by holding back the blinker or manual brights lever.

I checked all the fuses for the lights. Im thinking its a relay but dont know what effing relay it is? And the fog lights do not work as the headlights do not work...unless you hold back the blinker lever for manual brights.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we all no electrical problems suck

This is almost always the contacts in the headlight stalk switch. The contacts get hot from the current, especially when the fogs are also on, and then a plastic contact holder softens and deforms. The contacts then don't "contact" so you don't have light. You can either replace the switch assembly with a new one, or take yours apart and Xacto knife the deformed plastic so the contacts work again.
