Hey guys, I've search the forums high and low and I haven't seen anything like the issue I'm having.

I have a 1999 A4 1.8T Quattro Automatic and I have a few problems that I think may be related.

1. Just after turning the car off I cannot roll the power windows up. I know with most cars the power windows normally retain some power after the car has been turned off so that they can be rolled up or down. I find it odd the windows cannot be rolled up or down unless the key is in the ignition and turned at least to the on position or if the car is started.

1.1 When I open the door with my key and hold it in the open position the windows do not roll down, I think this may be related to the previous issue.


2. None of my automatic interior lights work. I can manually click on the from map lights or even the ones in the back by the c-pillar but even with them set to door they do not turn on when I open the door. Also the red lights in the door (I assume these are security or convenience lights) do not turn on.

3. The light in my glove box works intermittently, I honestly can't figure out what causes it to work or not. Sometimes I open the glove box and it's on, sometimes I open it and it's off.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the issue(s) could be? Someone suggested that I replace the interior light/sunroof switch panel. Could it be a fuse? I'm not very good when it comes to cars, but I've had the car for just over a year now and you better believe I'm learning...

 

Probably the best way to proceed with these issues is to use VAG-COM software to access the various systems in the vehicle. It may be possible that some of the settings were changed accidentally as some of the convenience items can be programmed for specific markets such as Europe, Japan or North America. The software and vehicle interface are available via the Internet for use on a PC computer.

If you do not have access to VAG-COM software, take the vehicle to a competent shop and have them review the settings or change them to suit your local area. The factory CD-based repair manual is available from Bentley Publishers and will provide the settings needed to program or reprogram the vehicle in the event the factory settings were changed.

At the same time, it may be helpful to go over all the fuses and connections, especially the earth/ground connections to ensure they are not corroded or loose.

Also, I know where the fuse box is but are the earth/ground connections in the same place? (Sorry I really green about these things)

 

There are earth/ground connections at various points around the vehicle; there are some located near the main fuse block on the LH side of the instrument panel. The Bentley manual provides a list of additional locations in the wiring diagrams depending on the local market the vehicle was intended for.
