Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) ??? what is this?

A computer controlled system that basically gives the car four brake pedals in a sense...
allowing the car to detect unusual yaw movement and selectively apply braking to only the wheels needed to bring the car back into line. This is done automatically without driver input and can be felt like a giant hand readjusting your drive line when you overcook a corner.

No, I have a 2000 before it was availible...
If I were ordering my car again, it would be a toss-up as to whether to get it. With Quattro and EDL alone, the car feels incredibly stable, even on wet, mudslicked roads. I also like that the car will do exactly what I want it to and not make descisions for itself! That said it is nice to have a back-up if you f- it up beyond your skill level. One use could pay for the investment. You can always turn it off when not needed, but this leaves a constant warning light lit in the display, kinda annoying.

no, just yaw rate. You're describing Active Body Control...
which is used in some VERY expensive cars. It basically takes ESP and adds active body control (spring rates, damping, cars attitude) That is the height of computer controls (without the car steering itself!) the hierarchy of electronic stability is:
1. ABS
2. ASR (two wheel drive anti-slip detection)
3. EDL (electronic differential lock, moves power side to side)
4. ESP
5. ABC (active body control)

ESP will also cut the power on you if it kicks in...
Nick Snyder's got it on his new S4 and hates it. It is very intrusive. I think if it detects any wheelspin whatsoever it tries to save you (even simple turns where you're just accelerating through the corner).
