Emission Inspection Problem with Chipped A4
Hi, Wonderful A4 people,
Have you faced any emission inspection problems with your chipped A4? If so, could you tell me which chip and which state? I am serioiusly thinking of chipping A4 1.8T.
Yes, I have followed the related discussion threads. I have read a swapping story to a spare stock ECU before going to a dealer or an inspection station. However, it is first a costly option. And the simple swapping does not undo, if any, the emission related damages caused by the chip (actually mainly by the higher boost caused by the chip).
Personally, I don't like any actions polluting our environment beyond the legal limit. Of cause, the legal limit is somewhat arbitrarily set, but it is a good target for us to achieve together. In my knowledge, A4 1.8T engine is, as a stock form, quite a clean engine.
Happy Holidays and Peace to All of Wonderful A4 People!

I'd think that there'd be no issue w/emissions
As you stated the 1.8t burns pretty clean. I recently had mine smogged here in Colo, land of the smog *****. The numbers it made on the smog dyno were VERY clean.
Regarding a chipped/upgraded turbo car, as long as the fuel management * timing is done properly, and you get the car (cat converter) good & hot before testing, I really doubt that there'd be any problems. At least here in Colorado.

It shouldn't be a problem...
I know A4s pass the California smog tests and prove to be WELL withing legal limits, when equipped with APR code. In fact, I've not heard of anyone having a chip related smog issue, regardless of tuner. (I only mention APR because they run rich, and I have direct experience with this software.) I believe California has the tightest emissions standards in the nation.
Some guys run "test pipes" which remove the Catalyst, and that pisses me off the same as you. It's extremely selfish and short-sighted, even if you can "get away with it".
...but things like chips and cat-back exhaust nither contribute significantly to smog problems or cause test issues.
