engine malfunction!

engine malfunction!
Engine malfunction light comes on when I start the car and it idles real rough. EPC light come on, too. Anyone seen this or know what its about? Of course it happens on the weekend can't get to dealer till tomorrow. And I am leaving on vacation Wednesday so any insight would help!

most likely you had some bad gas or something weird...
...happened. This is actually pretty common. As long as the engine cleared up, you light will probably go away and I wouldn't worry about it. You can run by the dealer and just have them pull a code really quick. Most likely it will just say that there was a misfire and you can go on your way.<p>Charles

Bad gas!! You think that's it? I sure hope so. I've been going to this Mobil pretty regularly. However I went somewhere else recently and got better mileage at the other station. That's when I started suspecting this Mobil station. I went back there (to the Mobil) to re-test the mileage gas and now this.
The only thing is I had this EPC (electronic throttle control - drive by wire?) light come on three times.

I've had my malfunction light come on during three occasions on my 2000 1.8T. The first time the dealer said it was that I hadn't turned enough "clicks" on the gas cap....maybe but I kinda doubt it. The second time (when they also replaced the master/slave cylinders) they said it coded a charcoal cannister and as a result they ordered one....not in yet. It came on again about a week ago and then mysteriously went out when I was driving it tonight. I supposed to get a chip installed in about two weeks but I'm hesitant to do so until this reoccuring problem is resolved.

The dealer says the drive-by-wire unit is no good. They determined this by checking the codes returned by the on-board diagnostic system.
They also said they never have had to replace this unit before. Last month I had a coolant leak off the front of the engine by the firewall. They also said they had never seen that before. Do I have a lemon? That time they gave me an A6 Avant loaner, though. This time I have a Saturn. I'm leaving for vacation Wednesday, I sure hope I don't have to take a Saturn.
