Default Engine swap

My 01 A4 1.8t 5spd quattro lost oil pressure, and toasted the engine. I have to do a swap. does anyone know if i can use a 2002 Passat gls 1.8t from a front wheel drive car in the audi with no problems? it has the same AWM engine code. any help would be appreciated.

Steve

Default Re: yes you can

i was drivin down the street, oil light comes on and beeps at me, 100 yards down the road i pull into a gas station, check the oil and it looks about half a quart down so i throw some in and keep goin, all of a sudden i hear a ping of some nature (now i know it was an exaust valve - rather all 8 of em) no place to turn off the road for about one mile when i get to a stop light, stop the car and it stalls out. AAA flatbeds it to my house, then i send it to the dealer, they say its gunna cost me 8k to fix and it was because the timing belt went, i tell them to take a flying leap and have it bedded out of there. Independant shop says it lost oil pressure, that the pump failed, timing CHAIN got stretched, 8 exaust valves got toasted. result, possible damage to the head, new exaust valves, new timing belt, tensioner... cuz its got 72k miles on it, new timing chain and tensioner, head bolts, gaskets, blablabla. should also do a water pump since the whole front end would be open, oil pump. and the turbo looked shot, guy before my must have run it like a race car. boils down to fixing the one ive got or paying 500 bucks more to put a passat engine i just found with 9,000 miles on it in there. my choice is the engine. total cost 2,475 for the engine w/turbo and shipping, 800 for the work he did to mine and for putting in the new one = new engine with 9000 miles for 3,275

Default i would go with forged pistons

check out the performance board. depends on what you want to spend for more power. but a k04 is a good, not too expensive upgrade. or if you have cash, apr stage 3 or, i would highly recommend a pes t-28 turbo kit. it runs about 3800 bucks. apr's kit is about 4500 and a k04 with software..about 1200 or so. there are some used ones floating around. but since the engine is out, i would take the time now to upgrade as much as you can.
