I've checked the archives and the FAQ's and cant find this problem mentioned. When I first start my 98 2.8 there is a slight exhaust odor in the car (yes with the windows closed). If I start and back out of the driveway the odor is real strong- it is SOMEWHAT mitigated by shutting off the heater fan before backing or starting.<br>When I mentioned this to the dealer a while back I was told that it is exhaust coming through the heat system. After a few months it sunk in that on a $30000 car the exhaust does NOT/ should NOT leak in. Has anyone else experienced or better yet had this problem fixed? thanks

If so, it could be that the engine is running really rich on start up. That would make for a much stronger smelling exhaust.

the problem is year round. though (perhaps unrelated) the first start in the AM requires around 3000 rpm before shifting out of 1st gear- the dealer said that that was normal to allow something to warm up sooner.?..
