Default Experimental Platform?

The tech at the shop I use recently told me the VIN number on my 98.5 A4 tells him my car is an "experimental platform."

Has anyone ever heard of this? Does anyone have any idea what does it means?

I do know my car is kind of a "98.25" with some characteristics of the 98 model year and some of the 98.5 revisions. Maybe this is the answer?

Thanks for any and all insight. I'm just curious!

Cheers,

Default My late 97 (3 days off from being a 1998) is kinda strange...

I dont have the audi footballs of the fenders (98.5+) and no they werent chnaged.
so im thinking early 97 had the footballs late didnt, and in 98 they brought them back, but then they went away again for 98.5?

Default There used to be a link somewhere on here...

...that listed the differences. for the most part, the changes from 98 to 98.5 were minor.

IIRC, the "football" logos came off, the tail lights were revised, and there were some minor changes in the engine compartment including a revised turbo oil line and heat shield.

Cheers,

What are you missing from the 98.5 changes?

Default The main thing was the revised oil line and heat shield...

...for the turbo. (The design change was to get more, and cooler, oil to the turbo.) I upgraded to the later design after my turbo died in the classic waste gate rod failure.

Apparently there was also a change in oil filters, as the parts department would always give me the wrong one based on my VIN. This doesn't matter anymore since I'm now using the "big" filter as per the TSB on oil sludging.

Cheers,
