Default So there is a tool... I was excercising my vulgarities a tad today when it came to the brake pedal.

The plastic kerjigger which keeps the brake booster push rod in the brake pedal was a bit of a pain in the ***. Some jackhole at VW figured out that they could just supercede the 8D part to a 1J part from a MKIV golf. The golf part is retained in the pedal by a totaly different means. The 1J part lacks the tangs to mount it to our brake pedal be it automatic or manual. The 1J part is effectively incompatible... supercedures drive me nuts sometimes. I managed to carefully coax the old piece of plastic from the automatic brake pedal without cracking it then by similar means installed it in the manual brake pedal.

I managed to liberate the ball end of the booster from the brake pedal by expanding the plastic tangs which retain the pedal to the booster. I used my fingers to compress the tangs, I only knew what I was doing because I had a broken plastic retainer on hand from the used manual pedal.

Is it just me or do the pedals look much closer together than a factory MT?

My thoughts exactly. Those look extremely close together.

Default ...

The appearance that the pedals are not spaced correctly has to do with the angle of the photo and the fact that the clutch pedal has no master cylinder to retain it from fully extending. The over-center spring only stops in two locations... all the way up and all the way down.

The bracket is the same between manual and auto and pedals are the correct items by part number so it is unlikely that the pedals are incorrectly spaced. They feel all the world like the pedals in my sedan and in the other A4 sedan I drive on a regular basis to/from work.

Default you are still using the stock (Automatic) brackets for the brake and Accel right?

just a thought but they may be spaced differently due to accommodate for the larger brake pedal...

Actually, closer pedals would be sweet. easier heel toe

Default There is no manual or automatic bracket... it is a one size fits all bracket

The automatic cars all have the machining on the bracket for the clutch master cylinder.

OK one size fits all is inaccurate there is a left hand drive bracket and a right hand drive bracket.
