Contrary to alot of the speculation on here, it's supposed to be changed at 75K. (Alot of poeple were saying 90K)

How come the belt last longer on the 2.8 than the 1.8T?

Word of friendly, potentially money saving advice: Change it before 60k miles.

Default like what? 40K? Sorry...had a long thread about this a while ago

Thanks for the advice but there's a fine line between preventative maintenance and paranoia about the timing belt breaking.

I know there are cases of the belts breaking early, but I don't think that's a reason to replace the thing of 15+K before it's scheduled time.

I can understand if you car is modded out, but on a bone stock car, I hardly think it's worth such a costly expense. (Yes I'm aware *if* it breaks it's more expensive)

I'm planning on doing it round 70K. (or if soemthing down there breaks before hand and I'm paying for the labor, they may as well change it out then) However, I'm not as paranoid about the thing breaking as some people on this board are.

Flame suit on...

does the year matter? It should be the motor. The manual was a 99 but my car is a 99.5

Default What?? modifications or no...

doesn't matter regards to timing belt. You can either be a tightwad who doesn't want to change your timing belt at 50-60K miles or you can be someone that can risk breaking the belt and spending a few thousand dollars in repair. You may not be paranoid now...but when it happens don't say we told you so.

IIRC (which I may not), the manuals starting in '00 recommend it at 60k.

Default The person you are describing is one in the same...

not two, but regardless, I'm not trying to be cheap. I'm just trying to point out that I think poeple start getting paranoid when they hear a few poeple's belts broke pre-maturely and start backing out their own mileage from the reccomended interval in hopes of avoiding the catastrophe themselves.

Fact is, your belt could break the day after you install a brand new one. Changing it 15+K prior to it's reccomended interval is not needed.

If you sleep better at night by changing it early, by all means do so, but don't preach it as gospel.
