Default Friend is considering A8, questions about reliability. Please, please help...

Sorry for the post on this forum, but I want to get as much input as possible, and there is not enough people on the A8 forum.

He is considering GS400, A8 and a few jeeps.
He really likes A8, but he questions reliability of the car.

I think that engine and tranny should be more then fine, but how about other parts of the car, such as suspension and ellectronics?

Please give us as much info as you can.

Thanks.

Default Some pointers from an A8 enthusiast

I think your friend should stay away from the A8 3.7, not because of any mechanical issues, but because the car is rather underpowered with 230 hp. The 0-60 time is something like 8.3 seconds for the 3.7 versus 6.8 seconds for the 32-valve 4.2 model. I think a nice 1997 A8 4.2 should sell for $35-$40K. A clean 1998 should sell for well below $45K. If your friend finds a used one that he likes, he shouldn't be afraid to make a fairly low offer to the owner. I think it's a buyer's market when it comes to used A8's. The car just doesn't get the respect that it deserves and the resale values prove it. On the other hand, this provides a good opportunity for a used buyer to get a great car at a great price.

Default Thanks for the tip. We found a 97 A8 4.2 fully loaded with 30Kmiles for about 30K. I think we

should be able to get one for about 25K USD directly from the auction. Its weird, but the prices here in Canada are soooo much cheaper then in states.
