Given the option what would be the better decision? Design and build a custom FMIC
or build two better than stock intercoolers to fit the stock location.
Considering the FMIC will heat the air before it cools the radiator and will be blocked somewhat by the stock A4 front end.
Use of the stock location will be enhanced by removing the fogs to help ventilation as well as a few other things. Maybe a mister or fan behind the intercoolers to draw air.
I am just looking at all my options.
As I see it now the FMIC would be cheaper and easier. You would surely have access to ambient air where the stock intercoolers may receive higher temp air due to the location in the engine bay area.
The stock location would be unique and leave the front open. It may cause a significant pressure loss when compared to the FMIC.
Ideas? Opinions? Questions? Concerns? Other?

Pro as in? If you look at the FMIC's available they are not exactly the best design.
But I know what you are saying. I have a friend that is very good. He is willing to work with me. I will be able to select core units that have the very lowest pressure loss for my given situation. In any commercial design there are compromises. If I go custom I won't have to make any. Along the way of the design we can monitor pressure loss and decide if we should go another route or do something differently.

Fluid dynamics engineer. Of course, it can be done by an individual willing to go through the trial
and error process or by custom manufacturing a copy or variation of one already marketed (no patent infringement as long as you aren't selling it). Modern designers can use software programs to test designs electronically before any tubing is bent or tanks are machined (or cast), etc.
You'd have to set up a pretty rigorous evaluation method, measuring flows, pressure drops etc.
I am no expert by any stretch but I do know that flows are very complex.

Thanks for the help. If I run the IC's in the stock locations then I will use the S4 piping as a
model. If I go with an FMIC it looks like it would be a bunch more work.
