My 98 2.8 has just started to "growl" at me for about 5 seconds after a warm start. After that everything is fine. Dealer thinks it may be the starter & suggests waiting for a failure. Any comments?

Is the sound coming from the engine compartment or from the rear seat / trunk area ? Could be from the fuel pump and fuel in the tank if it's a gurgling / growling sound from rear area. Would think it has to do with a pressure differential in the " closed " fuel system. My 96 does it too.

My '98 A4 did the same thing. After a warm start I would hear a sound like a chainsaw. Sound also happened during slow speeds. It turned out to be a piece of the rubber trim hanging down from the hood, and hitting the cooling fan. The dealer fixed the trim and tightened the fan, problem sovled.
