Default Has anybody tried installing springs themself?

I got HR sport springs that I want installed.
I want to install them myself and I am
wondering if anybody has done it or tried to.
How hard was it, how long did it take, what
tools do I need? Any suggestion would be
great.

Thanks!

Default Careful! you can kill yourself...

if you don't know how, don't have the right tools, and haven't done it, don't even try it... a springing spring that's popped out under tension can easily take your head with it.

Default If you have never done it, I strongly recommend you to get it done by a shop...

The A4 springs are one of the heaviest springs I ever took out. Not heavy in weight, but the springs themselves are large and require lots of pressure to compresses. Do not use those cheap rental kind of spring compressors (the pairs using 2 hooks and a large bolt and nut combo). They are good enough to compress springs of cars about 2600lbs in weight (i.e. Japanese cars) but not good enough for the A4. Trust me, I have a big hole in my garage and I am lucky to be alive as one of the big bolts stripped, slipped and flew all in a split second.

Don't get me wrong, I had compressed many springs as a shop mechanic for 7 years. The shop does have better tools, so I spent $180 on my own set of heavy duty compressors after the incident (which actually left a big bruise on my right arm, but at least its still intact as well as my head). Then, I installed some Eibach Pro's and total install with a good set of compressors is about 3 hours.

This weekend, we are installing KONI coil overs in A4ALLAN's car as mine is not in yet. They are easier to install as we just have to compress the Koni's and leave the stock alone (the coil overs needed assembly prior to install). Pics of the job soon.

Default I did it on a...

Scirocco. I read the Bentley manual many times before doing it. Unless you have a manual or good source of how to do info, pass on it.

I rented a spring compressor from AutoZone to get the job done. Alternatively, IF the strut/spring assembly comes out in one piece you may just want to take it to a shop near-by and just have them replace the spring. MUCHO cheaper (~$20) than having them do the whole job.

I've installed Jamex springs on my A4 2.6 -96. These are lowering the car 40 mm (1.6") front and back.

The change is not technically difficult, but don't even think of doing it without hi-quality heavy duty spring compressors!! The original springs need to be compressed alot, specially the front spring. Back is a 15 minute job/side when you have done the front!

With zero experiance but with pretty strong tools it took me 4 hours to do the front and about 1 hour to do the back.

Good luck!
