Has anyone ever tried changing the dash backlighting to blue like the VWs?

In a nutshell:
It works only on 97.x (somewhere in the middle of the year) and later models. These have red LEDs (white after 99.5) and transparent dash faces. You can change the LEDs to the color you want.
One caveat: if you put in blue LEDs, the hands will get rather dark. It's blue light going through red plastic, which filters out almost all of the light. Since the hands are illuminated by the same LEDs as the faces, I suggest installing white LEDs (for 97.x to 99.5) and putting blue foil behind the faces.
