here in toronto, the just heated mirror is $90.
If you get the self tinting one as well, it is over $200.

I just got the heated one.
I actually dont even like the side view mirrors tinted.

I remember this being discussed a lot when I first got my car. The consensus was that pre-'99 they were on all the time and cooked themselves after a few years. For '99 and later they were tied to the outside temp sensor and came on when it got below 59 degrees F. They would supposedly stay on after having been activated until the temp warmed above 77 degrees F. My original one on the drivers side is still warm to the touch in cold weather. I just had to replace the passenger side one after an accident and it hasn't been cold enough yet to check.

Here at ECS Tuning we offer the heated glass for 40.95 without anti-dazzle (tint). Or a heated and anti-dazzle for 194.55.

Is there a way to wire it up so the mirrors heat up if the defogger is switched on? If someone can get me a wiring schematic I can try to figure it out. Also what is the part number for the passenger side mirror?

It runs off the Window defogger switch. Just took a look a the schematic. Good way to test is, pop you mirror out and hook-up a multimeter.

It would be a stupid design to have it on all the time.

That's what I thought, but that contradicts what Nate said. I trust him more than I trust myself based on his years of experience. Also, is there a write up on how to disassemble the side mirror. And can someone get me the part number for the passenger side mirror. On the ECS website the passenger side mirror is more expensive which seems odd?

Thats why the new glasses has a thermal sensor on them that makes em turn off once they heated up.

Here is a pic of a old glass and a new one, the thing marked with red is the sensor:

Default here's the wiring diagram

Looks to me like the mirror defoggers are on all the time. "Hot in Run"

Audi is not immune to stupid designs. If you've ever changed an air filter on a B3, or had to turn up the radio to overcome fuel pump noise, you know what I mean. I guess they have interns, too.

Default B4 wiring diagram

Anybody think we could use the B4 switch and duplicate wiring to switch the mirrors with the rear defogger? Any reason why it might flame?

Are you referring to the stubby 1996 A4 side mirror?
