Default Heck of a time trying to remove my alternator (1998 A4 2.8 B5)

Guys, I'm trying to remove my alternator while I wait for a new one to arrive. I've got the 2 bolts on the front of the alt. out and I can rotate it. But it doesn't want to drop out. At least I assuming that's what should happen. Any tips? I'm guessing there's a 3rd bolt on the back that needs to come out -- I've haven't jacked up the car yet to take a look.

Thanks!

Default You have to pull the front end partially off

I replaced the regulator in mine not too long ago and found, much to my chagrin and frustration, the alternator will not simply drop out the bottom. You have to remove the front bumper and tilt the radiator and A/C condensor way forward so you can bring it out the front. This is very much a PITA in my opinion and very poor engineering.

...or, this is very good engineering on their part . It's enough to discourage the week-end warrior from trying to do it and encourage (actually force) owners to bring it in to their Audi dealer.

It would be helpful if you do not own one, to invest in the Bentley shop manual (www.bentleypublishers.com), which will describe each procedure. Removing the front bumper and placing the lock carrier into the 'service position' is very simple and can be completed in just a few minutes. If you do not have the special tool to support the lock carrier, you can purchase two long 6mm bolts (6x1.50x80mm) to accomplish the same thing.

From personal experience, I have found it a wise decision to remove the starter motor as well while the alternator is out and take both to a local automotive electrical specialist to have them overhauled. Local specialist shops usually do a much better job using OEM parts and testing each component than any 'remanufactured' or 'rebuilt' units from the Internet or chain parts shops. That way you avoid a 'core' charge and also know they will fit back into your vehicle.
