Default HELP - middle of brake pad replacement.

I replaced the front pads and rotors without problems. In the back, though, I am unable to retract the caliper piston. I read the FAQ, and I'm doing it right, but I have been turning and turning, and it doesn't appear to retract. It needs to go back quite a bit as the rears seem pretty worn compared to the front. The car only has 20,000 miles on it.

Any suggestions?

You need to apply decent pressure to the piston as you turn it in, try using a c-clamp to help

Default You may need to push/turn very hard.......

I took unbelieveable inward pressure while turning to retract my pistons. I almost broke every bone in my hand trying to push in and turn. I even constructed a tool to fit the piston notches and my wrachet wrench (Pep Boys may also sell a tool that fits). The special Audi tool the techs use pushes and turns with great force to perform the job very easily.

Just keep pushing and turning. It will eventually grab and go in. Try going out further first and then back inward...that seemed to help me. Good luck!

Default Oh the pain of it!

I was all sorts of sore after changing the back brake pads. You have to push very hard and turn at the same time. Even with one of those cheesy special brake tools that fits into the notches of the piston, it was extremely difficult. It takes a tremendous amount of pressure and turning to get those rear pistons back in.

As a result? I don't think I'm ever gonna touch rear brakes again. I'll pay someone else, thank you.

Default Thanks, All. I tried everything you suggested. Finally, I opened the bleeder valve...

It worked immediately. The other side was just fine without opening the valve. I have only driven the car 10 miles, so I can't give any impressions yet. I'll post 'em later.

Thanks, again.
