help needed
my 2001 a4 1.8t died yesterday while my wife was in transit. I hauled the car home and the problem or one of the problems is the engine spins over, no ignition, and the crank and accesories turn but the cam pulley does not. The timing belt is not broken. All I can think is maybe the bottom timing gear is somehow freewheeling on the crank shaft. Does anyone know what might have happened. The codes I read are highlevel knock, cam sensor highlevel, and a volume highlevel or something. I would like to have an idea of what it is so the dealer doesn't rape me for a bunch of unneeded overcharges.

Broken TB tensioner that gives enough slack for the belt to be slipping on the crank pulley
The fact that the engine turns but the cam pulley doesn't is ohh.... not good.
Bad case scenario - you need a new head.
Worst case - engine rebuild or a new engine (if pistons are severely damaged).
Not what you wanna hear but that's my guess.

on an interference motor?
you would have to have the the crank and cams instantly stop when whatever broke...broke. The fact that you brought it home and cranked it over a bunch of times while not spinning the cams doesn't give you a lot of hope.
Heads can be rebuilt and pistons can be replaced. Just hope you didn't get any small bits of metal flying around in your cylinder scoring the cylinder walls.
