Help in removing stock exhaust

I'm trying to remove the stock exhaust on MY2K 1.8TAvant, but can't seem to get the
"nub" through the rubber hanger. I tried grease, and Joy (the detergent) with no luck.
Is there a trick to this?

I just used a hooked screwdriver to remove the nub from the hanger

I used 3 bicycle spokes.

I stuck the 3 spokes in to expand the rubber around the nub. 3 small screw drivers might do the trick also.
