Default High-Pitch whine at 3K RPM's b4 OIL warms up??

.. I thought this only happens when it's cold, However, my '98 QTM will have a High-Pitch "hiss" sound when the RPM's hit 3K in 1st and 2nd gear BEFORE the oil temp. goes up. Is this normal??

(this goes AWAY after the car warms up, and the oil temp. goes up)

Default Keep it under 3000 RPMs until the engine is warm

Your engine is screaming for mercy, you!

Default But why?? (why do we have to keep it under 3k?)..

.. that means that we HAVE to accelerate like snails until the engine is warm. I'm also wondering why we have to do this.. and what is causing this high pitched sound. Call me paranoid, but I really would like to know what it is. thanks.

Default to minimize engine wear...

Most engine wear occurs when it's cold. Cold oil doesn't flow as well as warm one, hence doesn't offer optimal lubrication to both the engine and the turbo. Running on higher rpms just makes things worse.

So yes, if you care about the longetivity of your car, you should take it easy until the engine warms up, even if it means that you have to "accelerate like snails".

Now, your high-pitch whine - I have no idea what's causing it.

Default I answered this like a week ago, i got the same prob...

A guy I know who worked on Audis for 30 years told me it was the Pilot (or pullout?) bearing on the clutch. He said Audi had a service bulletin on it. I have the exact same thing, it happens at specifically 3k rpm, and when the engine is cold. Whever you get a new clutch, just tell whoever does it to replace that bearing, they should know what you're talking about. I dont htink it causes any harm, just annoying sound.

Default That may well be...

but nobody should run a cold engine at high RPMs.

Default What's the deal with service bulletin?

I know recalls you get a free fix. But what are the point of bulletins? Is Audi saying, yeah we admit its wrong, so.... deal with it? Is there a purpose other than acknowledging a fault?

Oh I know, I try not shift above 2600 when the oil is cold.

Default The pistons won't fit the cylinders perfectly either

All parts expand when they warm up. A cold engine has high internal friction.
